2. Far Away from Home – Realistic scene in Photoshop
Andrew Averkin gives us a detailed walk through the processes behind his amazing image Far Away from Home.

I dedicate this work to my wife. Her parents live very far away in Siberia, and as the distance is pretty huge, she has to travel a long way to get there. She misses her parents quite a lot because she can’t visit them very often. Probably everyone has this feeling when you are far away from home, family, friends, and far from the place where you live and from everything that you love and care about. With this image I’ve tried to capture those feelings of missing everything that is important to you. A lonely girl standing in an old train station platform after a rainy day brings these emotions to the mind, yet the morning sunshine brings hope that soon we’ll be close to everything that we love.

4. Hair masking – how to cut out hair in Photoshop

Cutting out people in Photoshop ready for compositing can be quite a time-consuming task, especially if they have lots of curly or fine, flyaway hair.
Luckily, the Refine Edge tool is there in Photoshop CS5, CS5.5, CS6, CC or CC2014 to save you time by doing a lot of the hard work for you by tapping Photoshop’s built-in Smart Radius and Edge Detection technology.
Here photographer Tigz Rice has created a quick, 9-step tutorial using photography of cabaret performer Aurora Galore to help you get the most out of cutouts in Photoshop using Refine Edge.

5. Dispersion Effect with Photoshop CS6

The dispersion effect is relatively straight forward in Photoshop CC but can be tricky to get right. The basic idea is to separate the subject from the background and then create a copy of the subject layer. One of the subject layers is then morphed using the Liquify tool to nearly fill the entire frame.
The morphed layer is then hidden from view and using a combination of layer masks and splatter brushes we reveal the morphed subject while hiding parts of the original subject. The result creates the feeling that the subject is somehow being blown away.

Retouching eyes professionally photoshop CS6 tutorial

Retouching eyes professionally photoshop CS6 tutorial is presented by Nathaniel Dodson.

When retouching portrait photography my go-to starting point is checking the eyes and retouching what is needed. On almost every image, the eyes are the focal point, the point of the image, which if you get them right, make your entire photograph look much more “professional”-whatever that means. I’m interested in making it look better, if it does that, I’m in. Let’s jump in and take a look at retouching eyes.

1.Create a low-poly portrait using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop

Here Brazilian designer Breno Bitencourt shows you step-by-step how to create a stylish low-poly portrait in Illustrator and Photoshop.
The secret to creating works in this style is working from the best reference photos – and first off Breno reveals how to capture these (using himself as a model). He then reveals how to work these up in Photoshop, then create a vector version in Illustrator.
Breno says you don’t need to be an expert in Illustrator or Photoshop to follow this tutorial, as long as you have a good eye – and a good amount of patience.
You can watch a video of the creative process of designing a low-poly portrait detailed in this tutorial.

2.Create urban type using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop

There’s no doubt about it, London is hip. In this tutorial Holland-based designer Bram Vanhaeren shows his admiration by creating a new piece that draws on all that’s great about the city – taking inspiration from last year’s Olympics, underground club scenes, and the vista from up high.
This masterclass is about giving your typography illustration a fresh touch and experimenting with traditional and digital media, mixing patterns and textures to give your work an extra personal spark. For this tutorial you will need basic Illustrator and Photoshop skills, as well as some watercolour paint.
Afterwards, you should have acquired hands-on techniques you can use on work ranging from typography and editorial to photo manipulation.

3.Create vibrant photos using Photoshop’s LAB mode

The LAB colour space is a rarely used feature of Photoshop, yet it has been around in Photoshop for years and is the perfect colour space for improving the colour in your images.
While RGB mode allows us to work with the red, green and blue channels separately – and CMYK lets us play with cyan, magenta, yellow and black – in LAB we have Lightness, A and B.
The L channel is the lightness channel, which acts independently of colour, while the A channel contains colour information for green and magenta, and the B channel contains colour information for blue and yellow.
By separating lightness from colour, we can make some quick adjustments to our image that, perhaps, might be time consuming or less accurate in another colour space.
Today we’ll be manipulating this photo of top burlesque performer Missy Fatale in the LAB colour space to increase the vibrancy of the colours: particularly in her hair, the snake and the green surroundings.

8.Master stylish light effects in Photoshop

Applying lighting effects to model shots is a classic application of Photoshop, but through poor practice and overuse of the same tricks, it’s become something of a cliché. In this tutorial, Fabio Sasso shows you how to put a fresh, stylish spin on lighting effects.
The secret here is to keep it simple and tap a 1980s look without overdoing it. You’re aiming for a sophisticated feel, not retro pastiche. Of course, something that looks simple isn’t necessarily easy to create, but here Fabio guides you step by step through the filters, gradients and blending modes that will bring a classy edge to your art.

10.Digital portrait painting secrets

Painter, like Photoshop, boasts a massive arsenal of powerful tools. The temptation for overenthusiastic artists is to employ as many as possible, but this can lead to cluttered, chaotic work. You can get stunning results with just a limited toolset, avoiding the daunting task of mastering a large number of tools.
Here Derek Lea focuses on a single tool, the Oil Palette Knife. It uses the colours and imagery from existing layers and spreads them around on a new layer, taking you far along the path from photo to painted portrait, with only fine detail to be added.
Derek began by assembling several elements in Photoshop, including a model shot and some hair extensions. The starting point for this tutorial, with a few predefined layers, can be found within the project files.
This is an adapted version of a tutorial in Derek Lea’s new book, Beyond Photoshop. Published by Focal Press, Beyond Photoshop shows you how can transfer your Photoshop skills into applications such as Illustrator, Painter, Cinema 4D, Poser and ZBrush – developing your style in new directions.

3.Create a digital painting of a robot mech

This tutorial by freelance concept artist Takumer Homma is a journey in creating a robot painting in Photoshop – though his techniques would work just as well in Corel Painter or even physical paints.

Here Takumer has focussed on art fundamentals such as gesture, lighting, tonal value, and composition. We will approach the painting using traditional art principles – using a series of the abstract shapes to establish the lights and the darks.

This is an approach that can be used in concept paintings for quick ideas and mood sketches to save time – while still allowing you to efficiently build on thwse to creating a convincing final artwork.

Takumer says that before jumping into painting, always start with some research to give yourself a head start and a direction – and a lot of reference images. Try not to rush this step, relax and be open to what you see.

While there are a great many Photoshop brushes he could have used for this tutorial – including many available for free online, Takumer found that he got best results using the default hard and soft round brushes for all except for the background.

4.Create beautiful lighting effects

In this tutorial, Toronto-based Murilo Maciel will reveal how he used Photoshop to create a fashion illustration with lighting effects, based around themes of beauty and light.

He describes this artwork – and the techniques behind it – as a more contemporary version of the first piece he ever created for us, back in 2007 (read it at here).

Murilo will detail the essential skills behind a modern fashion illustration – such as the subtle use of Photoshop’s retouch tool – and also show some lighting techniques that will give an extra sparkle to your artwork. Finally, he’ll demonstrate how adjustment layers can help you to quickly change the overall mood.

In the project files, you’ll find some 3D shapes that Murilo has created for this piece – though you can create your own. The core photography in this tutorial is from Shutterstock and can be downloaded from shutr.bz/YEKlsn, shutr.bz/18teUDb and shutr.bz/10aAt86 – but the techniques can be applied to any well-lit model shot, and Murilo believes you’ll learn more when adapting what’s detailed here to your own photography and style of work. “Use the techniques to create something new, adapt them, mix them up,” he explains. “Use new things you have learned before.”

1.Learn the best ways to create 3D type in Photoshop CS6 Extended

Currently, there are two main ways to create 3D typographic illustrations with extruded letters, textures and lighting. You can use Photoshop CS6 Extended – or soon, Photoshop CC – to easily create a relatively accurate rendering that’s great if you want a non-photorealistic look for graphics, logos and the like. If, however, you want a realistic render with accurate lighting, it’s time to move over to a 3D suite such as Cinema 4D. This is the easiest to learn and use if you’re used to Adobe’s toolset.

Here, Hawaiian illustrator Christopher Vinca takes you through two different renderings of the same type, created in Illustrator using Photoshop and Cinema 4D. He details the differences between the processes and the results that can be achieved.

In the first half of the tutorial, you will use the basic 3D tools in Photoshop Extended to create 3D type. You will then use photographs to texture the surface to add depth and details in a way that’s much faster than applying them to the 3D shapes before rendering.

In the second part, Christopher will teach you how to get photorealistic renders in Cinema 4D. You’ll learn how to use the free CV-ArtSmart plugin, set up lights and make a studio for your text. You’ll also create materials to make a convincing 3D object.

If you’re new to Cinema 4D but an old hand at Photoshop, this is an excellent first tutorial for the 3D suite, as you’ll be following a process in an application you know well, rather than in the one you want to learn.

2.Create a Devastating Tidal Wave in Photoshop using Photoshop CS5

Matte painting is a technique that filmmakers use to create backgrounds for scenes that can’t or don’t exist in real life. In the early days, matte paintings were actually painted onto glass. Today, modern filmmakers use digital applications such as Photoshop to produce the backdrops that they need. We have published many matte painting tutorials on this site meant for intermediate and advanced users. This tutorial is part of a series of tutorials that we will be publishing on this meant for those of you who may be relatively new to Photoshop or matte painting in general.
In today’s tutorial, Matte Painting 101: Create a Devastating Tidal Wave in Photoshop we will give New York City a break and will destroy London with a devastating tidal wave. Let’s get started!

3.Create beautiful lighting effects in Photoshop CS5 or later

In this tutorial, Toronto-based Murilo Maciel will reveal how he used Photoshop to create a fashion illustration with lighting effects, based around themes of beauty and light.

He describes this artwork – and the techniques behind it – as a more contemporary version of the first piece he ever created for us, back in 2007 (read it at here).

6.Create polygon graphics

The popularity of isometric shapes in digital art can be explained in many ways. This blocky style is retro, it’s shiny and there’s a lot of play involved when creating.

There are plenty of great examples online to get inspired by – www.polygonheroes.com and the works of our artist Ryan Barber (www.behance.net/rbarber), for example.

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to work from a model photo, combining both Photoshop and Illustrator to create exciting shape styles.

We’ll begin by using Illustrator’s Pen tool, and show you how to trace a grid of carefully mapped triangles on top of a photo.

A more interesting isometric illustration will have a map of triangles that’s not evenly distributed. Therefore, we will be adding and subtracting anchor points, and using the Direct Selection tool to adjust triangle corners, in order to distribute our shapes.

We’ll be using the Eyedropper tool, gradients and swatches too, showing how these are all used to fill and affect colour. After the initial vector drawing is complete, we’ll then take our design into Photoshop.

Here we’ll explore how to make overall colour changes to our rendered design, using Gradient Overlay, Levels and other colour adjustments to achieve a fantastic final image.

We’ve featured quite a few posts and images with the effect most call double exposure. This technique consists of 2 images superimposed. There are some really nice examples with very intricate overlaying, usually with faces of people mixed with photos of nature. I’ve been thinking about giving it a whirl in Photoshop for a long time and I’ve finally gotten around to it.

So in this tutorial/case study I will show you how to create this double exposure effect using Photoshop and some stock photos. The process is simple however it does take time to adjust the details.

In this tutorial, Adi Gilbert explains how he produces beautifully-crafted illustrations using a blend of traditional brushwork, and digital techniques with a tablet, stylus and Photoshop.

“I like to think of my Mac and my tablet as just another tool alongside my pencils, brushes and inks,” says Adi, “and try to combine them all to keep a hand-crafted feel to my work.”

By using traditional drawing techniques and textures, you can create a tactile, imperfect piece that can then be coloured and enhanced with editable, digital layering. This technique gives you the best of both worlds, especially when working to deadlines or changing requirements.

The illustration is a reinterpretation of a piece he did for a motorcycle magazine. He describes it as: “A pretty good example of how you can take advantage of the awesome potential a tablet and stylus can give, especially if you are more comfortable with holding a pencil or brush than working with a mouse. Unleash the power!”

5.Photoshop tutorial: Composite a 3D building into a photo

In this tutorial, architect and illustrator Andreas A Tjeldflaat takes you through the post-production steps of an architecture rendering in Photoshop. The featured techniques focus on marrying a CG building constructed in Modo and rendered using Rhino into a base photo, as well as building up an atmosphere around the structure that supports the aim of the design.

The goal of this image was to blend a Brutalist prison tower into an urban landscape and calm down its overpowering presence. To do this, the image frames the building as a backdrop to an everyday morning scene. The scene is not intended to be photorealistic, but rather to capture the spirit of the construction and its context. Some artistic touches have been added that take the image beyond realism.

The following techniques are applicable to post-production of any CG rendering. Although it can be seen as a step-by-step guide, the process is not as linear as it seems. It inevitably involves going back and forth between layers; adding, adjusting and tweaking, until it feels right.

So for this tutorial I will show you how to create the Iron Man mask using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. It’s not too detailed because I wanted to share a simple overview/walkthrough so you could play and explore by yourself. In the end that’s the best way to learn.

8.Photoshop tutorial: Fantasy light effects in Photoshop

Fantasy art scenes are usually handled with a liberal sprinkling of Photoshop plug-in fairy dust – but you don’t have to slavishly follow that route. By creating your own brushes in Adobe Illustrator, and using scanned elements with Photoshop, it’s a simple process to create otherworldly scenes that are alive with glow effects and shafts of virtual light.

This masterclass takes a standard stock model – a super high-resolution version is included on the download link, or you can use your own – and applies layers of light and vector shapes to generate the main image shown left.

During this masterclass, you’ll learn to wrap your source image into a multitude of layers that add a fantastical theme to your art. The key here is to tread softly. When recreating fantasy light effects, soft brushes and fine application is the order of the day. Anything that’s too heavy can ruin the look.

The masterclass also draws on a element that some Photoshop users are reluctant to explore – that of physical art then added to the composition. Here, Murilo uses tools such as a toolbrush and screwdriver in addition to digital design tools to create the whirling snow effect.

Obviously, the final result is down to you, but you should also experiment with colours and blends once you’ve mastered this technique to create your own look.

The best thing is you can create images like this without using a single plug-in.
